Soft skills in PE need instruments in the learner’s language. We linguistically and psychometrically validated the Fair Play in Physical Education Questionnaire (FPQ-PE) for Ukrainian adolescents and young adults — samples of 450 (ages 9–14), 490 (9–13) and 725 (18–21) after translation review with translators, scientific editors and pilot testing.

Psychometrics that passed

General internal consistency reached 0.861. Confirmatory factor analysis fit was good (χ²/df = 2.15, RMSEA = 0.074, SRMR = 0.058, CFI = 0.949). Test–retest reliability was strong (Spearman’s ρ = 0.80, p < 0.01). The 16-item tool keeps four scales: Respect towards teammates, Convention, Gamesmanship, Cheating.

What teachers can do with it

Use it to evaluate whether PE is building prosocial versus antisocial fair-play behaviours in Ukrainian 9–14 and 18–21 cohorts — not to shame a single bad call in a school match. Age-band patterns (e.g. higher antisocial scores alongside higher Convention in some male 9–14 groups) are described in the paper; read the tables before programme claims.

Why it matters now

Validated local instruments beat imported surveys with broken idioms. Fair play is measurable culture, not a poster on the gym wall.

Exploratory then confirmatory factor analysis shaped the final 16-item structure. Linguistic validation was not a single machine translation: translators, a scientific literature editor and pilot testing iterated the Ukrainian wording until it survived real adolescents.

Four scales — Respect towards teammates, Convention, Gamesmanship, Cheating — let PE teachers separate “knows the rules” from “will bend them for a win”. That distinction is the whole pedagogical point of fair-play education.

Where this sits in the lab

Biokineticum’s public notes exist so practitioners can reach the DOI without drowning in jargon — and so athletes, teachers and clinicians see that combat-sport science also publishes on prisons, faith, fair play, sauna physiology and disability policy. Soft topics still deserve hard methods: sample sizes, instruments, effect directions and explicit limits.

If you teach, treat or coach from these findings, copy the reference list into your syllabus, open the full text, and write down what you will measure next week. That is the only CTA that always fits.

Reading notes

Psychosocial and public-health papers describe associations in defined samples — not moral verdicts about individuals. We keep the language descriptive, avoid stigma, and point you to the DOI for methods and limits.

If the topic touches your clinic, classroom or programme design, treat this post as a map to the paper, not a substitute for it.
